Can anyone give me a time-line of amps and cabs used by Jon through the years? For example, the MKI stuff sounds like Hammond through Leslie. The MKII stuff sounds like Hammond through Majors through plain cabs (Did he run through the Marshall horn cabs?). The MKIII stuff sounds much less aggressive, and at the Cal Jam all I could see was the Silver Face that was for the piano, according to Dawk. MKIV sounded the same. The reunion tour in 1984 was even less aggressive with a very Leslie sound. And then over the years since, until his leaving the band, his sound is much more refined, less distorted, almost sample-like.
I really liked the raw, in your face, grunt of the MKII years. That thing was an awesome beast. I'm sure that as a keyboard player with classical influence like Jon, he probably prefers the more refined sound. That way he can show off his virtuosity. I, however, prefer to be beat over the head with that glorious wall of thunder! I guess it's a guitar player thing!
Dawk, what are your memories?
Thanks! Jim

Hi ritchiefan ! I can't tell you much about Jon Lord's equipment but at the Cal Jam, there are 2 leslie's on stage! On each side of Glenn Hughes's Bass rig. One you may see very close during Burn, as Ritchie's coming over to Glen's side and going down with his head just in front of the leslie as he'd like to hear if it works Must have been very louuuuuuuuud that day You may see the other one on You Fool No One. At the beginning, you'll see Jon Lord and if you look right over his hammond in the background, you'll see just beside the Bass rig the other one.

Hey HS!
I just watched Cal Jam again and you are correct! I'm sure I saw them before, but you know how Ritchie stole the show! I wonder what Jon was driving them with? Or was it just the Leslie amps?

Honestly, I can't tell, but this is the question Dawk knows certainly more about. I was only referring what I've seen on the DVD

''MARSHALL MAJOR'' AND AN ''CROWN'' (DC 300)...

Thanks Dawk! We had a pile of Crown DC300A's for our PA back in the day... I think Greg Lake used them for both his bass and guitar....back in the day!
Hey Dawk, I still would like to know who used the Marshall Horn cabinets back in later MKII days! I assummed it was Jon since I never saw any Leslies during this time. THere is no way they would put PA speakers on the backline, so I figured they were his by defalt! Any memories of this?
Thanks! Jim
